Academic rigor grounded in CBE
Citadel of Talents Academy & High School is a private institution committed to adhering to CBE standards as mandated by the Ministry of Education. As the older 8-4-4 system of education is phased out, Citadel of Talents is aligned with the old and the new changes. Kenya's new Competency-Based Education (CBE) system, is structured under a 2-6-3-3-3 model that replaces the older 8-4-4 system. This model organizes learning into two years of pre-primary, six years of primary, three years of junior secondary, and three years of senior secondary education, with a focus on practical skills, values and competencies rather than memorization. Assessment is continuous and competency-based, with classroom-based assessments (CBAs) carried out regularly by teachers and contributing about 60 % of a learner's final evaluation, and national assessments conducted by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) at key transition points (e.g., Grades 3, 6, 9 and 12). From Grade 3 onward, learners receive a unique Learner Assessment Number (LAN) that stays with them for life and helps build a comprehensive learner profile, which together with project work, portfolios and co-curricular achievements contributes to the School Leaving Certificate. In early grades like PP1–PP2 learners aren't given traditional marks but are assessed with rubrics (e.g., "Meeting Expectations" or "Approaching Expectations"). The page also outlines various learning areas under CBE and notes that schools need compliant systems to track competencies, assessments and portfolios effectively.
